Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary

Working with NOAA to create a world without plastic waste.

Through our strategic partnership with NOAA’s Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary (FKNMS), we’re working to recycle plastic buoys and downlines, diverting plastics from landfills and incinerators while helping protect the oceans.

Tackling an ocean-sized plastic waste problem.

The Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary utilizes plastics for its operations, which include helping to protect vital reefs and marine ecosystems. However, at the end of the lifecycle of plastic buoys and downlines, they set out to find a better solution than landfilling. Thankfully, we have a solution.

Conserving oceans

The Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary uses specific types of plastics that are imperative for ocean conservation. Because Brightmark can recycle these plastics, the FKNMS can focus on ocean conservation without worrying about creating more plastic waste.

A new type of recycling program

This first-of-its-kind recycling program recycles buoys and downlines that are traditionally non-recyclable—typically ending up in landfills or incinerators at the end of their intended lifecycle.

Creating circular solutions

Brightmark provides a feasible waste solution for the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary. It allows them to utilize specific plastics for their operations, which Brightmark can recycle at the end of their lifecycle.

“Partnering with Brightmark, now we can go home at night and go to sleep knowing not only are we doing a great thing for the reef. But also, we’re not contributing to the overflowing landfills and contributing to plastic in the ocean.”
