Single-use plastic pollution is a pressing issue threatening the planet and all its inhabitants. The problem is heightened by the long lifespan of plastic materials, which can take hundreds of years to decompose. As a result, when plastics aren’t recycled, they can accumulate in landfills and the environment. However, there are organizations working diligently to curb this issue and find solutions.

One organization is the Alliance to End Plastic Waste (AEPW)—a global nonprofit organization formed in 2019 to eliminate plastic waste from the environment. The AEPW’s mission is to help end plastic waste. To do this, they focus on enhancing waste management capacity and capability by improving collection, sorting, processing, and recycling systems, especially in underserved regions. The AEPW also focuses on reducing the amount of plastic waste that enters the environment in the first place. This includes promoting reusable products, encouraging businesses to adopt more sustainable packaging practices, and advocating for policies that incentivize the production and use of recycled plastic.

They work with companies across the plastic value chain, including chemical manufacturers, plastic producers, consumer goods companies, and retailers, to collaborate on a solution for plastic pollution. With their member companies, the AEPW has committed to investing $1.5 billion to help end plastic waste in the environment. Over the past year, the AEPW and its partners have amplified their efforts to advance circularity by testing and refining solutions that can be scaled worldwide. Through their collaborations, they leverage funding and expertise to drive the creation of new initiatives and technology. This includes technologies for plastic recycling, biodegradable plastics, and plastic alternatives. The organization has also established innovation hubs to foster collaboration among researchers, entrepreneurs, and industry partners to develop and scale up innovative solutions.

In addition to their partnerships and initiatives, the AEPW has conducted awareness campaigns to educate consumers about the plastic waste problem and encourage behavioral changes, such as reducing unnecessary plastic consumption and proper waste disposal. Here are five actionable ways to join the plastic pollution solution:

  1. Remember the Three Rs: Reduce consumption of single-use plastics, reuse items whenever possible, and recycle properly. Research local recycling guidelines and familiarize yourself with what plastic types are recyclable
  2. Volunteer or Donate: Support organizations working to address plastic pollution by volunteering or donating money.
  3. Educate Yourself and Others: Learn about plastic pollution and share your knowledge with others. Raise awareness about the problem and encourage friends, family, and coworkers to get involved.
  4. Support Policy Changes: Advocate for policies that reduce plastic and environmental pollution. Contact elected officials and tell them you support measures to address these issues.
  5. Make Sustainable Choices: When purchasing products, choose items with minimal and/or recyclable packaging. Support companies that prioritize circularity, sustainability, and reducing their footprint.

The AEPW is making significant progress in its efforts to combat plastic pollution. However, eliminating plastic waste from the environment is a complex challenge requiring continued collaboration and innovation from all stakeholders. Despite the challenges, the AEPW’s work inspires hope and demonstrates that creating a world free from plastic pollution is possible. Remember—reducing plastic waste is a collective responsibility: One daily habit change or small action can make a difference.
